Our family operation…

Kevin Horning started farming in 1978 with Kevin’s father, Dale, and brother, Randy. In 1983 Kevin married Sharon Evans from Ipswich, SD and moved to the farm where she quickly became acclimated to the busy farming lifestyle. In 1986, Kevin’s father retired, and his brother moved off the farm. This was also the year their first child, Margo, was born. Four years later, their son, Jake was born. In 1992, the last child, Lexi was born.

We have maintained various ag business ventures in our many years of farming.  In addition to farming our own acreage, we rent another 2400 acres. We also provide services such as custom combining, spraying, trucking, and spreading manure and ag lime.

In the spring of 2010, Jake graduated from Lake Area Tech in Watertown, SD with a degree in ag production and moved back to Cresbard to join us on the family farm. In 2012, Jake married Lindsey Christenson from Aberdeen, SD. She quickly found a job in the ag industry working for North Central Farmers Elevator which recently merged with SDWG to form Agtegra cooperative. They have two daughters, Aubrey and Josie, and they love flying with their father to check fields.

Jake and Kevin are both volunteer fire fighters for the Cresbard Rural Fire Department, and Sharon does the fire department’s bookkeeping.  All of us are active members of the Cresbard Methodist Church and Cresbard Sportsmen’s Club.  When we aren’t busy with farm work, we enjoy camping, fishing, traveling, and visiting our daughters Margo and Lexi and their families in southeast North Dakota.  We also own a 2-seat private plane which Jake enjoys flying anytime he can.

Along with farming our own land, we are also renting 2400 acres from various landlords. With the continual growth of large-scale farming operations, it seems to us that if you are not constantly expanding, you will get left behind. We always endeavor to leave all land that we farm better than when we started, whether it is our own or rented from another farmer; we believe it is vital that we make sure the land can be cultivated for generations of farmers to come. If you are thinking of renting out acreage, you can be sure the land will be in good hands with us; contact us if you are interested in discussing a rental agreement.
